Mobile Developer Day presented by Facebook + Parse

and Parse

When: November 14, 2013

Where: Facebook HQ, Menlo Park, CA

Opening Keynotes

Join Facebook and Parse for Mobile Developer Day on November 14th at Facebook HQ in Menlo Park, California. We'll open the day with the keynote, "Make it Sing: Designing for Mobile at Rdio" from Jason Russell, Product Manager for Rdio, the wildly successful mobile app. We know you'll get great inspiration for your own projects from this seasoned developer's experiences.

Build with Parse

Stop building apps the hard way. In our Parse-focused session, we'll show you how to build a full-featured native app, starting with the very first step of signing up for an account. We'll cover data sharing, basic login, social login with Twitter and Facebook, push notifications, and more so you can dive into the afternoon hackathon ready to build.

Grow with Facebook

You've built a beautiful, full-featured app with Parse, now how do you grow a user base? Increase traffic to your app using Facebook's mobile app install ads, a proven way to reach a more relevant audience and efficiently drive installs, and by driving word of mouth through integration of our Share Dialogs and Open Graph to help get your mobile app discovered.

After morning sessions on optimizing your app development process with Parse and Facebook, we'll put your newfound skills to work with a mini-hackathon. Teams of 4 will create apps with Parse and Facebook and an all-star panel will award prizes to the top 3 apps developed during the hackathon.

Mobile at Facebook

Speaker: Jocelyn Goldfein, Engineering Director, Facebook

Facebook is the world's most widely used mobile application. Its breadth of functionality and speed of iteration regularly pushes the limits of what is possible on mobile platforms. Come learn about the challenges and opportunities facing mobile developers, and how Facebook tackles the hard problems.

Jocelyn Goldfein

If one word describes Jocelyn Goldfein's career, it's variety. Her path has led her from Silicon Valley to Austin to NYC and back. She's worked for companies whose sizes range from tiny startup (MessageOne) to industry titan of 10,000+ (VMware), in roles ranging from engineer to co-founder to vice president. She's been equally omnivorous when it comes to technology and domain: she's worked across the stack from low level systems to web and mobile apps, and she's delivered enterprise distributed systems, shrink-wrap software, and the ultimate consumer social network: Facebook.

As a Facebook engineering director, she has helped scale the engineering organization through a period of hyper-growth. Notable releases include the Facebook Camera app and a redesign of the Facebook home page. Most recently she is focusing on Facebook's mobile experiences.

Jocelyn studied computer science at Stanford University, and has kids instead of hobbies.

Make it Sing: Designing for Mobile at Rdio

Jason Russell

Jason is a Product Manager at Rdio where he's working to make the future of streaming music more social, effortless, and beautiful. He began his career leading digital campaigns for ESPN, Activision, and truth®, which led him to Apple, where he spent 4 years leading large scale projects that formed the foundation of the new Online Store, including a major makeover of the iPad and iPhone purchase flows. He likes interesting music, pop music, and most of all interesting pop music.

Let's Build an App with Parse

Speaker: Christine Abernathy, Developer Advocate, Parse

We'll start with signing up for an account on Parse and walk through creating your very first Parse app. We'll cover data sharing, basic login, and social login with Facebook and Twitter.

Christine Abernathy

Christine has a passion for developers and mobile technologies and has yet to come across a mobile OS she didn't like. This has naturally led to her role as a Developer Advocate working with Parse. At Facebook, she's worked primarily on the iOS and Android SDKs and in supporting strategic Open Graph partnerships. Prior to Facebook, Christine headed up engineering at Mshift, a mobile banking software provider, delivering iOS apps and mobile browser-based products. Prior experiences include co-founding Clickmarks, a mobile and enterprise middleware provider. Christine has a BS and MS in Electrical Engineering from MIT.
1:10 - 1:40

Level Up: Making Your App More Powerful

Speaker: Bear Douglas, Developer Advocate, Parse

Using the app we started in the first session, we’ll learn how to add push notifications and cloud module integration for notification emails.

Bear Douglas

Bear worked as a developer advocate at Facebook and as community manager for the open source project SproutCore (now Ember.js) before joining the Parse team. She holds a BA with honors and a Master's in Archaeology from Stanford, and spent her time digging up ancient cities and not-so-ancient parts of San Francisco before making the obvious transition to working in tech. In her spare time, she sings a cappella with Facebook's group The Vocal Network, which is exactly as nerdy as it sounds.

App Presentations and Judging

Judges: Doug Purdy, Product Management Director, Facebook

Doug Purdy

Doug Purdy is the Director of Product Management where he drives the development of Facebook Platform including the Open Graph, Games & Payments and Developer Experience. He previously was a Director of Engineering and Director of Developer Relations at Facebook. Prior to joining Facebook, Doug spent 11 years at Microsoft in consulting, evangelism and engineering leadership roles building software development tools and frameworks.

James Yu, CPO, Parse

James Yu

James is a full stack force of nature. You’ll find him optimizing database queries, architecting new mobile features, and handcrafting visual designs and user experiences. He spends all day thinking about how to make Parse easier to use.

Prior to Parse, he was an early engineer at Scribd where he built many features of the site. He was also an audio hacker at Dolby Laboratories, contributing to the Dolby Digital surround sound psychoacoustic algorithms.

James holds a B.S. from Cornell and a Master's from Stanford in Electrical Engineering.

Christine Yen, Software Engineer, Parse

Christine Yen

Christine is happiest when neck-deep in an interesting project. After starting a Y Combinator startup and working on consumer-facing problems across the stack at Aardvark and Google, she's excited to be building something developers love.
She graduated from MIT with a B.S. in Computer Science, tries to read a book a week, loves commas (and parentheticals), and is surprisingly crafty.
